Okitsura Anime First Impressions: Is It Worth the Hype? 🤔

Yo, anime fans! 👋
The Winter 2025 season is officially here, and one of the shows I’ve been super hyped for is Okinawa de Suki ni Natta Ko ga Hougen Sugite Tsura Sugiru (Okinawa de Suki ni Natta Ko ga Hougen Sugite Tsurasugiru – MyAnimeList.net), which basically means “The Okinawan Girl I Fell in Love With is Too Difficult to Understand Because of Her Dialect” but everyone is calling it Okitsura. I finally watched the first episode, and let me tell you, it was a wild ride!
Here’s my Okitsura Anime First Impressions.

What’s the Deal with Okitsura?

So, the story follows this dude, Teruaki, who moves to Okinawa from Tokyo. He immediately falls head over heels for this cute girl, Higa, but there’s one tiny problem: she speaks in Uchinaaguchi, which is the local Okinawan dialect. It’s so different from standard Japanese that poor Teruaki has NO IDEA what she’s saying most of the time. Luckily, Higa’s best friend, Kana (who’s also kinda crushing on Teruaki), is there to translate.

Cuteness Overload and Hilarious Misunderstandings

This first episode was packed with funny moments. There’s this running gag where Teruaki’s last name, Higa, is super common in Okinawa. So, every time he says “Higa-san,” like half the town turns around. It’s hilarious! 😂 And the misunderstandings between Teruaki and Higa because of the language barrier? Pure gold.

One scene that really got me was when Higa was trying to comfort a lost kid. She was speaking in Uchinaaguchi, of course, but the way she was talking about how no one in Okinawa ever really says goodbye because they’re bound to see each other again? It was so wholesome and sweet. 💖

Is Okitsura Just a Tourist Ad for Okinawa?

Okay, let’s be real, there’s a LOT of Okinawa info packed into this episode. We get little lessons on the language, the culture, and even a recipe for Sata Andagi (Okinawan donuts). It definitely feels like a bit of a tourism ad at times. But honestly? I’m not mad about it. Learning about Okinawa is actually pretty interesting, and the way they weave it into the story is fun. Okitsura anime first impressions have definitely shown me that the series intends to showcase a lot of Okinawan culture, which I am here for.

Love Triangle Alert!

So, Teruaki is obviously into Higa, but it’s pretty clear that Kana is into Teruaki. And honestly? I’m kinda rooting for Kana. She’s adorable, and she can actually communicate with Teruaki, which seems like a pretty big plus in a relationship. Plus Higa seems totally unaware that Teruaki is crushing on her. It’s all very messy, and I’m here for the drama.

My Okitsura Anime First Impressions: A Verdict

Overall, I really enjoyed the first episode of Okitsura. It’s funny, cute, and a little bit educational. The characters are charming, and the whole Okinawan dialect thing adds a unique twist to the typical rom-com formula. The animation is a little janky, but that was a stylistic choice. Will it keep my attention for the whole season? Only time will tell. But for now, I’m definitely on board!
