ToggleAbout me
I’m a VIT alumnus who passed out this year i.e. 2024. I enrolled in VIT MCA course in 2022, Sep in the Vellore Campus.
Overview
Well, it is definitely better than other private institutions which you may find close to your homes. It can even compete with some low NITs depending on the batch.
You will get a beautiful lush green campus, facilities such as easy transport to railway station bus stop and even Chennai airports. Library is huge and a great place to study.
In case you need medical assistance, a health center is available within the campus. And they can refer you to the CMC hospital which is a very big hospital it anything is serious.
There are many places to eat inside the campus if you are bored with mess food. Dominos which is located inside the campus will directly deliver to your hostels. You can also make use of apps like Zomato and Swiggy which delivers to the campus gate.
Amazon has a pickup center inside campus near library, and other ecommerce sites like Flipkart and Myrta delivers near hostels.
Academic Rigor
Academics is definitely on the hectic side here. If you completed your graduation easy mode (without doing much stuff) be prepared to work extremely hard.
We had to complete 80 credits in 2 years. Per semester you will be registering for around 24-28 credits which will be around 7-8 papers (or subjects).
They will be combination of theory, lab and projects. Which means you will have to clear each of the components in them separately to pass.
Since MCA is a master’s degree, you will be asked to do some project with a research component in them. You will be familiarized with them so don’t worry about it too much.
My experience with faculties was so and so. Some are very good and explains things well, but some just flip over the ppts and repeats the contents.
Backlogs and Consequences
If you get a single backlog, you won’t be eligible for placements until you clear it. And unlike other colleges where you can clear in the following semester, here you first have to attend all of that subjects’ classes again following semester and then give the exam next sem.
This means if you get a back for a subject in a semester, say 2nd sem, you have to attend its classes again in 3rd sem and then give exams at the end of 3rd sem
Be very cautious and try not to get backlogs in any case.
GPA and Attendance
Attendance criteria is very strict requiring minimum 75% attendance. And it does not round off to the next number. So, if you have 74.9% attendance in a paper, you have to appear for it again. Digital and biometric attendance is taken after every class.
So, after every class please check your attendance and see if you’re given present or not. If not, please notify the faculty immediately to rectify because after a week attendance of that week is locked.
Students who have 9+ cgpa overall after first sem can skip classes as attendance criteria of 75% wont apply to them. So try to aim for being a 9 pointer every sem if you do come to VIT and you’ll have much needed relief.
VIT MCA Review for Placements
As for placements, I will give a rough figure since the number of students is very high and VIT officially does not share exact data for placements of MCA.
For our batch Vellore campus had ~400 students for MCA, and if we include other campuses total would be 600~700 students.
Around ~300 students were placed or in internships across all campuses. Around 50~60 companies came for MCA but for Btech branches the number was around 800 companies.
Minimum stipend for internship was as low as in the range of 10k and highest went upto 60k. Average CTC for placements you can expect to be around 6lpa. Highest CTC was around 16-18 lpa.
This year 2024 was particularly bad for placements for all colleges not just VIT. You can expect the number a little bit higher by the time you pass out for your batch.
I have to say there is very less transparency from placement cell and very less companies for MCA compared to Btech branches.
So, start preparing for companies from the moment you join. Separate time for placement preparation you will never get. Keep it going along with academics.
Final thoughts
I think I gave all major points you should definitely have in mind. Some things may sound scary, but it is because it is scary.
If you know you can make yourself stand out from the crowd here, then it is decent option to do MCA from here.
All the best for your future.
